Housing First has proven to be the most effective way to end homelessness in cities throughout the country. It can be the difference between life and death.
Housing First is an approach to quickly and successfully connect individuals and families experiencing homelessness to permanent housing without preconditions and barriers to entry, such as sobriety, treatment or service participation requirements. Supportive services are offered to maximize housing stability and prevent returns to homelessness as opposed to addressing predetermined treatment goals prior to permanent housing entry.
— U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
Our three Housing First communities in Portland, Maine, were born from a shared vision between Avesta Housing and Preble Street. Our vision is to solve homelessness through access to safe, quality, and supported housing for people experiencing the most acute health, housing, and service needs.
