PORTLAND, Maine — U.S. Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) met with Avesta Housing leadership on Nov. 1 at Porter Station, Avesta’s newest affordable housing development in Portland, for a roundtable discussion on the housing crisis; Avesta’s work to provide safe, quality, affordable homes to people in need; and ways federal legislation can address the growing need for housing in Maine and nationwide.
The hour-long discussion, which was proposed by Sen. King, focused on finding solutions to the many challenges faced by an increasing number of people who struggle to find a safe, quality, affordable place to live, from renters struggling to keep up with rising housing costs to first-time homebuyers who are being priced out of the real estate market. Avesta staff provided information on how their organization is addressing those challenges — including building more affordable homes; connecting Avesta residents to services that help them achieve and maintain housing stability; advocating for legislation that supports affordable housing; and acquiring, restoring, and selling homes at affordable prices through a program that Avesta recently launched.
