Avesta Housing President & CEO Rebecca Hatfield participated in a panel discussion and roundtable in South Portland on Sept. 18 hosted by U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Maine Gov. Janet Mills that announced Maine’s new Home Energy Rebate (HEAR) program.
Funded by a $36 million federal grant supported by the Biden-Harris administration’s Inflation Reduction Act, the rebate program will help eligible households lower their energy bills while reducing carbon emissions. Rebecca provided information about how the program will benefit affordable housing, including making it more feasible for affordable housing developers to incorporate clean energy and energy-efficient features into new construction. These features will improve indoor air quality and enhance climate control for our residents, decrease the carbon footprint of housing, and reduce energy costs when paired with sustainable building design or renewable energy features.
