Find an Apartment FAQs

For properties in Maine, cats are allowed with a $100 pet deposit. Senior/disabled properties also allow 1 small dog (with some restrictions) with a $100 deposit. No deposit is required for service animals.

For properties in New Hampshire, the same is applicable, but there is no pet deposit.

Housing vouchers can typically be used at any unsubsidized apartment if the payment standard covers the rent. For applicants with General Assistance, a guarantor will be needed (such as a co-signer). If you do not already have a housing voucher, you can reach out to your local housing authority.

When you move into an Avesta apartment, you commit to a 12-month lease.

Applicants must meet the age requirement at the time of application. Some properties are for people who meet an age requirement OR have a disability; others are simply age-restricted. This will be specified in the property advertisement.

Because we are equal opportunity housing, it would not be fair if we only called certain people to let them know what is available. We recommend that you check our website frequently for vacancies.

Avesta Housing follows all guidelines for Fair Housing. This means that vacant apartments are offered to the first qualified household. If there is no waitlist at the time the apartment becomes vacant, it will be advertised on the website for anyone to apply.

How to use our search features/website/application

Any vacancy advertised on our website will list the income requirements for the property. Some properties have a maximum income listed, and some have an income range.

If you do not meet the income range or minimum income but you have a housing voucher, you may still be eligible.

If you have an existing account with Avesta through RentCafe, click ‘Register’, then enter your name and email address. RentCafe will recognize that you already have an account and will prompt you to enter your password.

If an apartment becomes vacant and we have exhausted our waitlist, we will post the vacancy on our website and accept new applications.

All of the properties with open vacancies and/or open waitlists are listed on our website. Click ‘Find an Apartment’ to view them.

Application and application process

For most of our apartments, the program guidelines that we follow require that we verify all income and assets.

No. Waitlists are for specific properties or specific types of units only. Even if you are on a waitlist, we recommend that you regularly review open vacancies.

We recognize that it can be very difficult to find housing, and we wish we had more apartments available to meet the needs of the community. We follow all guidelines for Fair Housing and process applications in the order they are received.

Since waitlists are for specific properties or specific types of units only, even if you are on a waitlist, we recommend that you regularly review open vacancies.
